There is a need to focus on addressing the problem of Indigenous poverty, suicide, life expectancy, etc. Let’s not forget to mention arrest and incarceration rates, deaths in police custody, Constitutional recognition, and many other issues that remain unresolved.

A country declared the place unoccupied and then proceeded to steal the land, harvest the trees, establish a penal colony, murder and enslave the original inhabitants, spread wide and far formerly unknown diseases that wiped out tens of thousands of Indigenous people.

They methodically stole the children from their parents in a deliberate attempt to extinguish the entire Indigenous race of People (and a practice that continues today in a modified form). They taught a whitewashed version of history that deliberately ignored our First Nations’ ancient habitation of this land. Rewrote the countless atrocities and injustices inflicted upon them by the new conquerors while lauding the magnificent achievements of modernity.

Yes, we could “all start to get along” but even now we face a potentially divisive debate about a simple gesture of reconciliation that has been overwhelmingly endorsed by the media which is owned by a very small percentage of wealthy owners.

Of course, it won’t solve all the problems outlined above, but that’s not its intention. It’s simply a means for First Nations People to have a say about issues of concern to them – as opposed to the ‘top-down solutions’ imposed upon them by mainstream politicians and bureaucrats. It’s really a no-brainer, but if we as a nation can’t even agree to that, well “getting along” is nothing more than an empty slogan.

Happy Australia Day!
